A luxury road safari is a private safari travelled by vehicle rather than by light aircraft, with the same guide and the same Land Cruiser from the first morning to the last. Ongeri Expeditions runs four road routes in Kenya and Tanzania, from USD 7,500 per person sharing in the green season for 8 days through Laikipia, Lewa and Samburu, to USD 12,500 for the 12 day overland journey from the Maasai Mara across the Isebania border to the Serengeti. Every route includes the camps, park and conservancy fees, a private vehicle and guide, a Nairobi night, airport meet and assist and medical evacuation cover. We drive no more than four to five hours in a day, and we fly the legs that would waste one.

A light aircraft saves hours and costs you the country. For some guests that is the right trade. For others it removes the very thing they came for.
On a fly in safari you meet a new guide at every camp, and spend the first morning of each stay explaining yourselves. On the road, one person learns what you want to see by the second day, and spends the rest of the week finding it.
Light aircraft cap bags at about 15 kilos in soft holdalls. In a Land Cruiser you bring the long lens, the tripod, the books, the wine and a suitcase that stands up on its own.
The Rift Valley escarpment, the Maasai markets, the coffee farms of Kiambu, the flower farms at Naivasha, the highland forests below Mount Kenya. Fly in guests see none of it.
The vehicle is yours all day. Stop for the picture, stay with the leopard, take breakfast where you like, and go back to camp when you are ready rather than when the plane leaves.

Prices move with the camps you choose and the month you travel, and we quote the exact figure for your dates. Travelling as four or six shares the vehicle further, which is why the last column drops.

A private safari travelled by vehicle rather than by light aircraft, with one guide and one vehicle throughout. It suits guests who want continuity, who photograph seriously, who dislike luggage limits, or who simply enjoy seeing the country between the parks.
Not necessarily. A private vehicle and a senior guide for a week or more often costs as much as the flights it replaces, sometimes more. Guests choose the road for the experience, not to save money.
We cap them at four to five hours, and we never place two long days back to back. Nairobi to the Maasai Mara is five to six hours, Arusha to the Serengeti is a full day, and we build both around a proper lunch stop and an afternoon arrival.

Yes, and we often suggest it. Drive the legs where the country is the point, such as the Rift Valley or the Ngorongoro highlands, and fly the legs where the distance adds nothing, such as the Mara to the northern Serengeti.
Nairobi to the northern Serengeti, anything involving Lamu or Zanzibar, and most single night stops far from the previous camp. We will say so plainly rather than sell you a day in the car that spoils the week.
Main roads in Kenya and Tanzania are largely tarmac and in good condition. The last stretch into most parks is not, and that part is genuinely part of the safari. Our vehicles and guides are equipped for it.
Often, yes, because the vehicle is yours and the day bends around your family. We keep driving days shorter for younger children and build in stops. Tell us their ages and we will shape the route accordingly.
Yes, at Isebania between the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti. Our team meets you at the border and hands you to your Tanzanian guide, and the formalities usually take under an hour.
In each country, yes. That is the point of a road safari. On the Kenya and Tanzania overland journey you have one guide in Kenya and one in Tanzania, because guiding licences do not cross the border.
