In short
- The floor holds about 25,000 large animals in 260 square kilometres, the densest lion population in Africa and a handful of the black rhino left in Tanzania.
- Position beats decoration. A lodge on the rim puts you on the floor at first light. A lodge in Karatu adds 45 minutes to 1 hour each way.
- Lemala Osonjoi, eastern rim, 10 minutes from the descent road. From about USD 1,050 per person per night, about USD 2,450 at the peak.
- Crater’s Edge, on the rim, from about USD 1,100 to about USD 1,950. The value choice with a rim position.
- andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is the grandest address on the rim and the dearest, quoted on request.
- Two nights, not one. One night means arriving in the afternoon and leaving the next morning, and it is the commonest mistake on a Tanzania itinerary.
Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano 19 kilometres across, with walls 600 metres high and a floor that holds about 25,000 large animals. It is the one place in Tanzania where you can reasonably expect lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and flamingo in a single morning.
It is also the one place where where you sleep changes what you see, because the floor empties of light and fills with vehicles at the same hour.
Why position is the whole decision
Vehicles come up from Karatu, the town below the escarpment, every morning. If your lodge is down there, you join them. If your lodge is on the rim, you are ahead of them, and the first 2 hours on the floor are a different place: low light, cool air, and lion still moving.
There are 2 descent roads. The main one on the southwestern rim, and the Lemala road on the eastern rim, which is quieter. Which road your lodge sits near matters more than its thread count.
The lodges
| Lodge | Where | To the descent road | Guide price |
|---|---|---|---|
| andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge | Southwestern rim, on the lip | Minutes | On request, and the dearest on the rim |
| Lemala Osonjoi | Eastern rim, in the forest | About 10 minutes | From about USD 1,050 to about USD 2,450 |
| Crater’s Edge | On the rim | Minutes | From about USD 1,100 to about USD 1,950 |
| The Manor at Ngorongoro | A coffee estate near Karatu | About 45 minutes to the gate | On request |
| Gibbs Farm | Karatu, on the escarpment | About 45 minutes to the gate | On request |
Prices are guides, per person sharing, and they move with the season. We quote exact dates rather than working from a table.
andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge
Thirty suites in 3 small camps on the southwestern rim, in a style that has been described as Maasai meets Versailles and is best seen rather than described. Chandeliers, brocade, a butler and a fire lit before you reach the room. It is on the lip of the crater, so the view from the bath is the floor itself.
It is the most photographed lodge in Tanzania and the most expensive on the rim. If the crater is the centrepiece of the trip and the budget is open, it is the one.
Lemala Osonjoi
Fifteen suites in the forest on the eastern rim, roughly 10 minutes from the Lemala descent road, which is the quieter of the two. Fireplaces, deep baths, butler service and a calm that the grander lodges do not quite manage.
This is the one we book most, because it combines a rim position with a rate that leaves money for the Serengeti. It carries the 2 crater nights on our 14 day Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya journey.
Crater’s Edge
A rim position at a notably lower rate, with the crater immediately below. Simpler than the other two and honest about it. For guests who want the early descent and would rather spend the difference on a night in the Serengeti, it is the sensible answer.
The Manor and Gibbs Farm
Both sit near Karatu, below the escarpment, on coffee estates. Both are lovely, and The Manor in particular is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon. Neither is on the rim, and the morning drive is 45 minutes to the gate before you even begin to descend.
They make sense as a Tanzania arrival or departure night, or for a guest who wants a garden and a pool more than an early crater morning. They do not make sense as your only crater base if the crater is why you came.
What it costs beyond the bed
Two charges apply whichever lodge you choose. Ngorongoro Conservation Area entry is USD 70.80 per adult per day, charged for every day you are inside the area including the rim. The crater descent fee is USD 295 per vehicle for the day on the floor, split between the guests in the vehicle.
On 2 nights for 2 adults that is roughly USD 425 on top of the lodge, and some lodges include it while most do not. Ask, because it is a common surprise.
Two nights, not one
The commonest mistake on a Tanzania itinerary is a single crater night. You arrive in the afternoon, descend the next morning and leave. One descent, and you are in the queue for it.
Two nights gives a full day on the floor with a picnic, and a second day for Empakaai crater, the Olduvai Gorge or the Maasai bomas on the highlands. The second day is the one guests mention afterwards.
Our verdict
Book Lemala Osonjoi. A rim position on the quieter descent road, 15 suites, and a rate that leaves money for the Serengeti. It is the one we put most of our guests in and we would stand behind it for anyone.
Book andBeyond Crater Lodge if the crater is the centrepiece and the budget is open. There is nothing else like it in Tanzania and the photographs do not oversell it.
Book Crater’s Edge if you want the rim without the rate. Book The Manor only as an arrival or departure night, never as your only crater base.
Whichever you choose, take 2 nights. One night is a descent, not a visit.
