In short
- The central Serengeti, around Seronera, holds resident game all year and has the highest predator density in the park. It also has the most vehicles. Lodges from about USD 800 per person per night, with the best at about USD 2,250.
- The Grumeti Reserve is 350,000 private acres on the western corridor, held by Singita. Off road driving, night drives, and almost no other vehicles. From about USD 2,700, and about USD 4,300 at Sasakwa in the high season.
- Game viewing is better in the centre on most days of the year. The experience is better at Grumeti on every day of the year.
- The migration passes through the centre twice and through Grumeti once, in roughly June, which is Grumeti’s moment.
- Our usual answer is both, with 3 nights in the centre and 3 at Grumeti, on one short flight between them.
The Serengeti is 14,750 square kilometres, and where you sleep inside it changes the safari more than which lodge you pick. The two choices people actually weigh are the central Serengeti around Seronera, and the Grumeti Reserve out on the western corridor.
They are 40 minutes apart by air and they are not the same holiday.

Why the centre is still the best game viewing
The Seronera valley has permanent water, which means permanent prey, which means the highest concentration of lion and leopard anywhere in the Serengeti. Guests who want to be certain of big cats in 3 days should sleep near Seronera. It is that simple.
What you pay for that certainty is company. In July and August a leopard in a sausage tree near Seronera will have a dozen vehicles under it within 20 minutes, because every operator in the park is working the same roads and radios.
What 350,000 private acres actually buys
Grumeti was a hunting block that had been shot out. Singita took a conservation lease in 2006, removed the hunting, funded an anti poaching unit and a scout training school, and the game has come back over 20 years. Buffalo herds run to a thousand. The elephant are relaxed in a way they are not everywhere in Tanzania.
Because it is a private reserve rather than national park, the rules change. Your guide can leave the road to follow a cheetah. You can drive after dark with a spotlight, which is the only way to see aardwolf, genet and the cats actually hunting. You can walk. None of those are allowed in the national park, and together they are the real difference, not the thread count.
There are 4 Singita lodges and camps across the reserve for a piece of land the size of Greater London. You will drive for an hour without seeing another vehicle.
The lodges
In the centre
Four Seasons Safari Lodge is the full service option, built around a waterhole the elephant use all day, with an infinity pool over it, 3 restaurants and the only proper kids club in the Serengeti. From about USD 1,750 to USD 2,250 per person per night with the game package.
Warangi Ridge and the tented camps of its type sit at the other end, from about USD 800 per person per night in green season. Simpler, closer to the ground, and far better value than their rates suggest.
At Grumeti
Singita Sasakwa is an Edwardian manor on a hill with a view over the whole western corridor, 10 cottages, a stable and a tennis court. About USD 3,100 to USD 4,300 per person per night. We have written separately on whether Sasakwa is worth it.
Singita Faru Faru and Sabora sit roughly 13 percent below Sasakwa, from about USD 2,700. Faru Faru is on the Grumeti river and is the one we book most. Sabora is a 1920s tented camp out on the plains, and it is the most romantic address in Tanzania.
Who each one suits
Book the central Serengeti if
- This is a first safari and you want to be sure of lion, leopard and cheetah.
- You are travelling with children and want a kids club and a pool.
- The budget has to work, and USD 800 to 2,250 a night is the range.
- You are coming in the calving season, January to March, when the southern plains are the place to be and the centre is the right base.
- You would rather spend 2 extra nights than 2,000 extra dollars.
Book Grumeti if
- You have been on safari before and the vehicles at a sighting have started to bother you.
- You want night drives and walking, which the national park does not allow.
- You are travelling in June, when the herds come through the western corridor.
- Photography is the point, and off road access is worth real money to you.
- You want the best lodges in East Africa and are not pretending otherwise.
What we usually recommend
Three nights in the centre and 3 at Grumeti, with a 40 minute flight between them. You get the certainty of the Seronera game and then the quiet of the private reserve, and the second half feels like a reward rather than a repeat.
If the journey only has room for one, and it is a first safari, take the centre. If it is a second or third safari, take Grumeti and do not look back. Our 14 day Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya journey uses the centre, and we build the Grumeti version on request.
Our verdict
For a first safari, the central Serengeti. The game density is genuinely the best in the park, and at USD 800 to 2,250 a night it leaves money for more nights, which matters more than any lodge.
For a second safari, Grumeti. Off road driving, night drives, walking and 350,000 acres to yourself are not luxuries bolted onto the same experience. They are a different experience.
For a journey with room for both, 3 and 3. It is the only arrangement where nobody comes home with a regret.
