Luxury Safari in Kenya: What It Really Costs and Why It’s Worth It
Spoiler: It depends—but here’s what to expect if you’re chasing the wild wrapped in five-star service.
When people think of Kenya, they imagine the golden grasslands of the Masai Mara, lion prides under acacia trees, and sunsets that make your soul pause. But when it comes to planning a luxury safari in Kenya, the question we hear most is: “How much will it actually cost?”
Let’s break it down—transparently and tastefully.
The Safari Budget Spectrum: What Defines “Luxury”?
In Kenya, “luxury” safaris go beyond the basics. We’re talking about:
-
High-end camps and lodges (think &Beyond Bateleur Camp, Angama Mara, Mahali Mzuri)
-
Private game drives and guides
-
Fine dining under the stars
-
Seamless bush-to-bush flights
-
Extras like spa treatments, hot air balloon rides, and cultural immersions
So what’s the cost for this kind of experience?
The Price Ranges (Per Person, Per Night)
Luxury Level | Cost Estimate (USD) | What’s Included |
---|---|---|
Entry Luxury | $700 – $1,200 | Great lodges, shared game drives, soft drinks, all meals |
Premium Luxury | $1,200 – $2,500 | Designer lodges, private guides, airstrip transfers |
Ultra-Luxury | $2,500 – $5,000+ | Exclusive-use villas or tents, butler service, heli-flights |
Prices vary depending on the season—July to October (Migration Season) and December Holidays are peak, while April–May offers more value without compromising quality.
So, What Drives the Price Up?
-
Accommodation Type
-
A night at a top-end tented camp like Mahali Mzuri can cost $3,000 per person. But you’re getting panoramic views, Michelin-level meals, and private decks with plunge pools.
-
-
Game Viewing Experience
-
Private vehicles vs. shared game drives can add $300–$800 per day.
-
Balloon safaris over the Mara? Add around $500–$600 per person.
-
-
Transport
-
Scheduled bush flights between Nairobi and the Mara range from $250–$450 one-way.
-
Private charter? You’re looking at $2,000+ depending on the route.
-
-
Inclusions
-
Most luxury lodges are fully inclusive: gourmet meals, house wines, guided walks, and game drives.
-
Exclusions usually include premium spirits, park fees (around $80–$100/day), and some experiences like balloon rides or massages.
-
Example Itinerary Cost Breakdown (7 Days)
Let’s say you want a 7-day luxury safari covering Nairobi, Masai Mara, and Amboseli:
Item | Approx. Cost (Per Person) |
---|---|
2 nights at Giraffe Manor | $2,400 |
3 nights in the Mara (Angama) | $6,000 |
2 nights in Amboseli (Tawi) | $2,000 |
Internal Flights & Transfers | $1,200 |
Park Fees & Extras | $800 |
Total | ~$12,400 USD |
It can go higher if you choose private-use lodges or fly in by helicopter.
Can You Do a Luxury Safari for Less?
Yes—smart travelers know how to strike balance:
-
Go during shoulder season: March, June, or November
-
Mix & match lodges: Combine premium and ultra-luxury properties
-
Book early: Some lodges offer early bird deals up to 25% off
-
Work with a local expert: We know which lodges are worth the splurge
What Are You Really Paying For?
Luxury in Kenya isn’t just about the thread count or sparkling wine (though you’ll have plenty of both). It’s about access:
-
Uncrowded wildlife sightings
-
Lodges where everyone knows your name
-
Perfectly timed sundowners with no one else for miles
-
Being able to say: “I saw the Migration… and I had it to myself.”

Having gone to a safari before, the safari offered by Ongeri Expeditions was way different and the luxury level cannot be unmatched! We enjoyed all the four destinations we went to; Amboseli – we saw the big elephants, Samburu – we were lucky to spot all the special five, Ol Pejeta – This conservancy was special to us, we saw the last two northern white rhinos and that was amazing and finally we finished with Masai Mara – were we saw the big five and had breakfast with the lions !
My family and I want to thank Abner for organizing such a great safari! All went well and we really appreciate. I recommend Abner and the team at Ongeri Expeditions if you’re looking for a well planned luxury safari.

From the day I contacted Ongeri Expeditions until the day we left Kenya, our experience with this tour operator was exceptional! Abner is a lovely person and a joy to work with. We were in constant communication and he never failed to answer my many questions. He organized our trip to Uganda to go Gorilla Trekking and then on to Kenya for safari in three different and distinct areas. Everything was taken care of. We didn’t have to think about anything but having a fabulous time. Being from Canada it was difficult to find a tour operator and we are so grateful to have been recommended to Ongeri Expeditions. Can’t wait to book with them again.
