A tented suite at Mahali Mzuri, looking down the Motorogi valley in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Kenya

Mahali Mzuri or Mara Plains: which one?

Both sit in the same conservancy, 20 minutes apart, at broadly the same money. Guests ask us to choose between them most weeks, so here is how we actually choose.

← All guides

In short

  • Same conservancy, same game. Both are in Olare Motorogi, which means off road driving and night drives, and no vehicles from outside.
  • Mahali Mzuri has 12 tents, a hillside view down a valley, an infinity pool and the best food of the two. From about USD 1,800 per person per night, rising to about USD 2,750 in the migration months.
  • Mara Plains has 7 suites on the Ntiakitiak river, the strongest guiding in the conservancy, and the Wilson flights and all park fees inside the rate. From about USD 2,200, rising to about USD 4,350.
  • The honest difference is not luxury. It is what the rate includes, and whether you want a view or a river.
  • We book Mara Plains more often for serious wildlife travellers, and Mahali Mzuri more often for families and first timers.

Olare Motorogi is 33,000 acres of private Maasai land on the northern boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It holds roughly one tent per 700 acres, which is the lowest bed density in the greater Mara, and the two camps everybody has heard of are Mahali Mzuri and Mara Plains.

They are 20 minutes apart. The game is the same game. Guests still ask us to choose between them almost every week, and the honest answer depends on 3 things: what the rate includes, whether you want a view or a river, and who is travelling.

Those prices are guides, per person sharing, fully inclusive, and they move with the season. We price exact dates rather than quoting from a table, because the difference between two weeks in June can be a thousand dollars a night.

Where the money actually goes

Mara Plains looks dearer and often is not. Great Plains build the return light aircraft flights from Nairobi Wilson into the nightly rate, along with the Reserve and conservancy fees and the Great Plains Foundation contribution. On a 4 night stay that is roughly USD 600 per person of flights and about USD 400 of fees that you would otherwise pay on top.

Mahali Mzuri includes the conservancy fee, all meals and drinks, and day and night game drives, but the flights are extra. It also runs Pay 3 Stay 4 through much of the year, and on a 4 night stay in green season that offer brings the effective figure down to about USD 1,350 per person per night, which is the cheapest way into this conservancy at this level.

Compare the 4 night total, not the nightly rate. The two camps swap places depending on the month and the offer.

The tents

Mahali Mzuri has 12 tented suites raised on decks along a ridge, each with a private terrace looking down the valley. They are large, modern and comfortable, with the design confidence you would expect from the Virgin group. Two are family tents with a second bedroom.

Mara Plains has 7, under riverine trees on raised platforms, in the brass and canvas style Great Plains do better than anyone. They feel like a camp rather than a hotel, which is the point. The Jahazi Suite takes a family on exclusive use.

If somebody in your party has not camped before and is nervous about it, Mahali Mzuri is the easier first night. If they have been on safari before and want to hear the river, Mara Plains is the one.

The guiding

This is where we would separate them. Great Plains run a guiding operation across Kenya and Botswana and their Mara guides are among the best we work with. Vehicles are open sided, they carry a maximum of 4 guests when a camp is not full, and the camera support is better than anywhere else in the conservancy.

Mahali Mzuri guiding is good, and some of the guides are excellent, but the camp is built around the whole experience rather than the wildlife alone. If photography is the reason you are coming, that difference will matter to you by the second morning.

The food, the pool and the rest of the day

Mahali Mzuri wins here without much argument. The food is the best in Olare Motorogi, the spa is real rather than a tent with a table in it, and the infinity pool looks down the valley at a waterhole. Between drives, there is somewhere to be.

Mara Plains has no pool. The middle of the day is a long lunch, a book and a nap, which some guests love and others find long. Know which you are.

Who each one suits

Book Mahali Mzuri if

  • You are travelling with children from 6 upwards.
  • Somebody in the party wants a pool, a spa and somewhere to sit out the heat.
  • It is a first safari and the word camping makes anyone nervous.
  • You are travelling in green season and want Pay 3 Stay 4, which is the best value at this level anywhere in the Mara.
  • The view from the bed matters as much as the view from the vehicle.

Book Mara Plains if

  • Photography or serious game viewing is the reason for the trip.
  • You would rather the flights and fees were inside one figure with nothing to settle later.
  • Seven suites sounds better to you than twelve.
  • You have been on safari before and want the camp to feel like a camp.
  • You want the option of the Jahazi Suite on exclusive use for a family.

What we book

Across a year we put more guests into Mara Plains, because most people who ask us to choose are coming for the wildlife and the all inclusive rate suits the way we build journeys. Mahali Mzuri wins the families, the honeymoons and anybody travelling in green season on a budget that has to work.

Both appear in our journeys. Mahali Mzuri carries the last 4 nights of our 14 day Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya journey, and Mara Plains carries the Mara half of the Rwanda gorillas and Maasai Mara journey.

Our verdict

If you are coming for the animals, book Mara Plains. The guiding is better, the vehicles are better for photography, and the flights and fees inside the rate make the real total closer than it looks.

If you are bringing a family, or anybody who wants a pool and a spa between drives, book Mahali Mzuri. In green season with Pay 3 Stay 4 it is also the best value at this level in the whole conservancy.

Either way you are in Olare Motorogi, which matters more than either camp. Off road driving, night drives, no vehicles from outside, and one tent to every 700 acres.

Is Mahali Mzuri or Mara Plains more expensive?

Mara Plains has the higher nightly rate, from about USD 2,200 per person in green season against about USD 1,800 at Mahali Mzuri. The totals are closer than that, because Mara Plains includes the return flights from Nairobi Wilson and every park and conservancy fee, while Mahali Mzuri does not include the flights. Compare the 4 night total rather than the nightly figure.

Are Mahali Mzuri and Mara Plains in the Maasai Mara National Reserve?

Neither is. Both sit in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, private Maasai land on the northern boundary of the Reserve. That is an advantage rather than a compromise: off road driving and night drives are allowed in a conservancy and are not allowed in the Reserve, and the bed density is far lower. You can still cross into the Reserve for a day.

Which is better for families?

Mahali Mzuri. It takes children from 6, has 2 family tents, a pool and a spa, and the middle of the day has somewhere to be. Mara Plains takes children from 8 and the Jahazi Suite works well on exclusive use, but there is no pool.

Which has better guiding?

Mara Plains, by a clear margin. Great Plains run their own guide training across Kenya and Botswana, the vehicles are built for photography and they carry fewer guests. Mahali Mzuri guiding is good, but the camp is built around the whole stay rather than the wildlife alone.

How many nights should I stay?

Four. Three is the minimum that justifies the flights, and the fourth is where the conservancy starts to pay you back, because you stop chasing sightings and start sitting with them. Pay 3 Stay 4 at Mahali Mzuri makes the fourth night free for much of the year.

When is the best time to go?

July to October for the migration and the river crossings, at the highest rates and the tightest availability. January to March for excellent big cat viewing and far fewer vehicles. April to June is green season, the cheapest of the year, and the conservancy is at its emptiest.
