Land of the Serengeti

Tanzania.

Where the plains run to the horizon and the Migration moves like weather across the land.

Africa's grandest theatre.

If Kenya is the birthplace of safari, Tanzania is its grandest stage. The Serengeti runs to the horizon. The Ngorongoro Crater holds an entire ecosystem within its volcanic walls. The country is vast, twice the size of California, and holds landscapes so distinct they could each belong to a different continent.

What most itineraries miss is the private land. Grumeti and Mwiba are held under concession rather than as national parks, which permits off road driving, night drives and, at Mwiba, walking with a guide. None of that is possible inside Serengeti National Park, and it changes a day entirely.

Tanzania does not whisper. It declares itself, in full voice, every single day.

Pair the northern circuit with Zanzibar for the classic finale, or fly south to Ruaha and Nyerere for wilderness with almost nobody else in it. Either way, this is Africa at its most cinematic.

Tanzania's iconic landscapes.

Six reasons to add Tanzania to your journey.

I.

The Migration, In Full

From the calving plains of the southern Serengeti to the Mara River crossings, Tanzania holds the Migration for nine months of the year.

II.

The Crater

Ngorongoro is unique in the world. A self contained ecosystem inside a volcanic caldera, with the highest density of large mammals anywhere in Africa.

III.

Private Concessions

Grumeti and Mwiba are privately held, which permits off road driving, night drives and walking. None of the three is possible inside Serengeti National Park.

IV.

Black Rhino, Twice Over

Ngorongoro holds one of the last reliable black rhino populations on the continent, and Grumeti has a successful reintroduction of its own.

V.

The Untouched South

Ruaha, Nyerere and Katavi offer wilderness on a scale almost extinct elsewhere, with walking safaris and boat based game viewing.

VI.

Zanzibar Next Door

Tanzania's Indian Ocean archipelago is an hour from the Serengeti, and on our Mnemba Island journey the flight is included.

When to travel.

Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep · Oct

Peak Season

The northern circuit at its best. Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti, and dry season game viewing across Tarangire and Ngorongoro.

Jan · Feb · Mar

Calving Season

The southern Serengeti calving grounds, when several hundred thousand wildebeest give birth in a matter of weeks. Predators in full action.

Apr · May

Green Season

The long rains. Some camps in the south close, but the northern circuit turns lush and dramatic and is almost empty. The best value of the year.

Nov · Dec

Short Rains

Brief afternoon showers, green landscapes, and the Migration moving south again. A quieter and more atmospheric time to travel.

Tanzania, answered.

June to October is peak, with Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti and dry season game viewing across Tarangire and Ngorongoro. January to March is calving season on the southern Serengeti plains, which is extraordinary for predators. April and May bring the long rains, the lowest rates of the year and a green, almost empty northern circuit.

A volcanic caldera some 260 square kilometres across on the edge of the Serengeti ecosystem, holding an entire self contained ecosystem within its walls. It has the highest density of large mammals in Africa and one of the last reliable black rhino populations on the continent. Ongeri Expeditions recommends two nights on the rim rather than one, so you descend with a full day.

Land held under a private lease rather than as a national park. The Grumeti Reserve and Mwiba are both concessions, and they permit off road driving, night drives and, at Mwiba, walking with a guide. None of those is allowed inside Serengeti National Park, so the same wildlife makes for quite a different day.

Yes, and it is the most natural pairing in Africa. Zanzibar is about an hour from the Serengeti by light aircraft. On our Mnemba Island journey the return flight from the Serengeti, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro or Arusha is complimentary, so the crossing costs nothing.

Our Tanzania journeys run from USD 10,500 per person sharing for seven days across the Maasai Mara and Serengeti, to USD 30,100 for the eight day Grand Circuit across three private reserves. Most guests land between USD 10,500 and USD 15,000 per person.

Most nationalities require an eVisa, applied for online before travel. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are arriving from or transiting through a country with risk of transmission, which includes Kenya. Ongeri Expeditions confirms the current requirements for your passport in writing before you travel.
