Three and a half hours from Nairobi, the Seychelles is the most natural place on earth to end a safari. Granite boulders the colour of pewter, water in four shades of blue, and islands where giant tortoises still outnumber guests.
The choice comes down to which island, and how far from the world you want to be. Below are the resorts we book most, and how they differ.
The Seychelles at a glance
- Where 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, about 1,500km east of the Kenyan coast
- Getting there Roughly 3.5 hours by direct flight from Nairobi, making it an easy safari extension
- Main islands Mahe for choice and access, Praslin for beaches, La Digue for calm, plus private islands
- Known for Anse Source d'Argent and Anse Lazio, Aldabra giant tortoises, the Vallee de Mai and the coco de mer
- Best time April, May, October and November are calmest, though the islands are warm all year
- How long Four to six nights after safari, or seven plus to combine two islands
Choosing your island
- Mahe. The main island, with the airport, the widest choice of resorts, restaurants and hikes.
- Praslin. Quieter, home to Anse Lazio and the Vallee de Mai, where the coco de mer grows.
- La Digue. Bicycles rather than cars, and the most photographed beach in the Indian Ocean.
- Private islands. Fregate and Felicite, where the island is effectively yours.
