Good to Know
Because it is private land. Conservancies and ranches allow walking, horse and camel riding, night drives and off road driving, and vehicle numbers are low. The game is excellent and the conservation work is among the best in Africa.
Yes. Lewa and neighbouring Borana hold one of the largest black and white rhino populations in East Africa, and tracking rhino on foot with a ranger is possible at several camps.
June to October and January to February are dry and superb. March to May is the green season, quiet and good value, and Laikipia holds up better in the rains than many parts of Kenya.
Sirikoi Lodge and Kifaru House on Lewa, and Loisaba, &Beyond Suyian, Tambarare and Lodo Springs in Laikipia. Arijiju and Lengishu on Borana are the finest exclusive use houses.
By light aircraft from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, about an hour, or about four to five hours by road. Helicopters also run from the Maasai Mara and to Lake Turkana.
