The Grumeti Reserve is a private concession on the western edge of the Serengeti, and the arithmetic is what makes it remarkable. Roughly 350,000 acres, with a very small number of guests permitted across the whole of it. You can drive for a morning and pass nobody.
Sasakwa sits alone on the crest of a hill in the middle of it. It is a manor house rather than a camp, Edwardian in style, with a library, a billiard room, a tennis court, a stable and a wine cellar holding several thousand bottles. Nine cottages, each with its own heated plunge pool and a view that runs to the horizon.
Almost everything is included once you arrive. All meals, all beverages, twice daily game drives, laundry and tennis. Return flights are included as well, from Kilimanjaro, Nairobi or Zanzibar, so your international routing is entirely yours to choose.
Why we love this journey — because the reserve is the point, not the lodge. Grumeti is a single private concession of roughly 350,000 acres, and the beds across the whole of it would not fill a small hotel. Off road driving and night drives are permitted here, and neither is allowed inside Serengeti National Park. Then there is the arithmetic once you arrive: every meal, every drink, every game drive, the tennis court and the laundry are already paid for. Four nights at Sasakwa costs less in extras than four nights almost anywhere else at this level, and the flights are included from three different airports so your international routing stays your own.

Grumeti has one of the more successful rhino reintroductions in Tanzania, alongside excellent resident lion and elephant.
A day with nothing in it
The fourth day is left deliberately open, because at this level the best days are usually the unplanned ones.
You are met on arrival at Kilimanjaro International, Jomo Kenyatta or Zanzibar, whichever suits your international routing, and flown into the Grumeti Reserve. Sasakwa sits alone on a hilltop with the western Serengeti laid out beneath it, and the drive up from the airstrip is the first game drive. Lunch on the terrace, then out again in the late afternoon.
The Grumeti Reserve covers roughly 350,000 acres of the western Serengeti, held under a private concession with a small number of guests across the whole of it. That is the point of coming here. Full days out in open vehicles, with lion, elephant, buffalo and a healthy population of black rhino reintroduced to the reserve. Between June and July the migration passes through on its way north, though the resident game is exceptional whatever the month.
The fourth day is deliberately unstructured. A long morning drive and an afternoon by your own pool, or a full day out with a packed lunch. Tennis, riding, archery, the spa, or an hour in the wine cellar with somebody who knows it well. Sundowners somewhere with a view, which at Sasakwa is most places.
A final early game drive and breakfast, then the flight out to Kilimanjaro, Nairobi or Zanzibar for your onward connection. If you would rather add a beach, Zanzibar is a short hop and we can extend from here.

The herds usually pass through the western corridor between roughly June and July on their way north, though this moves with the rain and no operator can promise a date. Grumeti holds exceptional resident game year round, including lion, elephant, buffalo and a reintroduced black rhino population, so the reserve does not depend on the migration.
Easily. Zanzibar is a short flight and the return leg is already included from there, so adding four or five nights on the coast is straightforward. Ongeri Expeditions can extend this journey in either direction.
