How to choose

New in Laikipia: JW Marriott at Solio

Laikipia's newest arrival opened on 1 July 2026. The JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp is a nineteen tent all inclusive camp in the Solio Game Reserve, one of Kenya's oldest private rhino sanctuaries, cradled between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares.

When to go

Laikipia rewards a visit all year. June to October and December to March are the driest months, with the easiest game viewing and the clearest views of Mount Kenya.

The green season, around April, May and November, brings newborn animals, superb birding, dramatic skies and lower rates, with far fewer guests.

How to reach Laikipia

Most guests fly from Nairobi Wilson by light aircraft, roughly forty five minutes, landing at Nanyuki, Loisaba, Segera, Ol Pejeta or Lewa, then transfer a short way to camp. Driving takes about four to five hours through the highlands.

Because the flights are quick, Laikipia slots neatly into a wider journey. Three or four nights here pair beautifully with the Masai Mara, Amboseli or the Kenyan coast, and we arrange the flow.

Laikipia is a highland region in central Kenya, north west of Mount Kenya and roughly a forty five minute flight from Nairobi. It is a mosaic of private conservancies and ranches rather than a national park, which is why it feels wild, exclusive and uncrowded.

Laikipia holds the Big Five, with strong populations of black and white rhino, along with rarities such as African wild dog, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx and gerenuk. It is one of the best regions in Kenya for rhino and predators.

The best known include Ol Pejeta, Loisaba, Segera, Ol Jogi, Ol Lentille, Suyian, Borana, Solio and Mugie, with neighbouring Lewa just to the east. Each is privately managed, so vehicle numbers are low and walking, riding and night drives are permitted.

They are different, and they pair beautifully. Laikipia is quieter, more exclusive and more active, with walking, riding, camel treks and night drives. The Masai Mara delivers the greatest concentrations of game and the Great Migration. Many travellers combine both.

Laikipia is a year round destination. The driest, easiest months are June to October and December to March. The green season, around April, May and November, is quieter and beautiful, with lower rates.
