The Masai Mara, also spelled Maasai Mara, has some of the best luxury safari camps and lodges in Africa, and where you stay shapes the whole trip. The right camp puts you in the right part of the reserve for the season, with strong guiding and the level of comfort you are paying for.

This guide covers eight of the best luxury safari lodges and tented camps in the Maasai Mara for 2026, with indicative rates for each. For every camp we cover where it is, what makes it special, who it suits, and roughly what it costs, so you can build a shortlist quickly. All of them sit within reach of the Great Migration in season and work well as the heart of a luxury Kenya safari.

Masai Mara reserve or private conservancy?

It helps to understand the two settings before you choose. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is the central, most famous area, and it includes the Mara Triangle in the west, where the Mara River crossings happen during the migration. Bordering the reserve are private conservancies and concessions, such as Olare Motorogi and the Kichwa Tembo concession, which are quieter, with fewer vehicles at sightings and the option of night drives and walking safaris. Many guests combine the two, a few nights in the reserve and a few in a conservancy. Each camp below notes its setting.

1. Angama Mara

Location: Mara Triangle, on the Oloololo Escarpment, inside the reserve. Angama Mara is best known for its views. It has two camps, each with fifteen glass fronted tented suites set high on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, looking out over the Mara Triangle. The name means suspended in mid air in Swahili, which fits the setting. This is also the area used in the film Out of Africa.

Best for: couples, honeymoons, and anyone who wants a dramatic view from the room. Hot air balloon flights depart from the camp, and the Mara Triangle is one of the better managed, less crowded parts of the reserve for game drives.

Rates from: USD 1,450 per person per night, all inclusive (indicative)

2. Mahali Mzuri

Location: Olare Motorogi Conservancy, a private conservancy bordering the reserve. Mahali Mzuri is Sir Richard Branson's camp, part of the Virgin Limited Edition collection. It has twelve modern tented suites raised on platforms along a ridge, plus an infinity pool, a spa, and a strong reputation for food. As one of only a few camps allowed in the one hundred and thirty three square kilometre conservancy, sightings are private and uncrowded.

Best for: travellers who want contemporary design and a private conservancy experience, with night drives and off road game viewing that are not permitted inside the reserve itself.

Rates from: USD 1,660 per person per night, all inclusive (indicative)

3. Cottar's 1920s Camp

Location: the Olderkesi Conservancy, the Cottar family's own private concession on the southeastern edge of the Mara, next to the reserve and the Tanzania border. Cottar's is owned and run by one of Kenya's oldest safari families and is styled on the classic 1920s safari era, with cream canvas tents and period furniture. Sitting on its own private concession, it is exclusive and quiet, with game viewing away from the crowds and the option of walks and night drives.

Best for: honeymooners, families, and travellers who want a sense of safari history and a high degree of privacy. There is a dedicated family tent, which makes it a strong choice for those travelling with children.

Rates from: USD 995 per person per night, all inclusive (indicative)

4. Mara Plains Camp

Location: Olare Motorogi Conservancy, a private conservancy bordering the reserve. Mara Plains is a small Great Plains Conservation camp with only seven tented suites, and it is consistently rated among the best in the Maasai Mara ecosystem. Its position gives guides access to several distinct wildlife areas, so sightings are excellent and rarely crowded. Conservation is central to how the camp operates.

Best for: keen wildlife watchers and photographers who put the quality of game viewing and guiding above all else, and who want a small, intimate camp.

Rates from: USD 1,850 per person per night, all inclusive (indicative)

5. Ishara Mara

Ishara is a Kenyan owned luxury camp with river facing suites, an infinity pool, a spa, and the first Starbed in the Mara for a night under the stars. It also has a photo studio in camp with professional cameras and a resident photographer, which is unusual in the region. Being inside the reserve on the Talek River means strong wildlife sightings close to camp all year, with the Olkiombo airstrip only a short drive away.

Best for: photographers, first time visitors who want to be inside the reserve, and families, with suites that include river suites and family suites and rates that cover meals and drinks.

Rates from: USD 850 per person per night, all inclusive (indicative)

Rates are indicative published rack rates in US dollars, per person per night sharing, and change with season and availability. Peak season, from July to October and over the festive period, sits at the top of each range. We confirm exact rates and any current offers when we quote your dates.

How much does a luxury Masai Mara safari cost?

As a guide, superior luxury camps in the Mara run from around USD 850 to 1,200 per person per night, while ultra luxury camps run from about USD 1,200 to 2,600 or more. These rates are fully inclusive of accommodation, meals, drinks and daily game drives.

Season is the biggest factor. The July to October migration and the festive period carry the highest rates, while the green season from November to June is quieter and better value. Flights, park and conservancy fees, and hot air balloon safaris usually sit outside the nightly rate. For the full picture of what a trip adds up to, see our guide to the cost of a luxury safari.

Which Masai Mara camp is right for you?

A quick way to narrow it down:

How to get to the Maasai Mara

Most guests reach the Mara by air. Scheduled light aircraft leave Wilson Airport in Nairobi through the morning and take around 45 minutes to the Mara airstrips, followed by a short game drive transfer to camp. Which airstrip you use depends on your camp: Kichwa Tembo and the Mara Triangle in the west, Olkiombo for the central reserve, and Olare Motorogi, Ol Seki or Mara North for the northern conservancies.

You can also drive from Nairobi, around five to six hours by 4x4. International travellers fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, then transfer across the city to Wilson for the light aircraft hop. We arrange every flight and transfer as part of your fly in safari, so the connections are seamless.

Beyond our featured camps

The Mara holds many more fine camps than any single list can hold. In the Naboisho Conservancy, Mara Nyika, a Great Plains and Relais and Châteaux camp of raised treehouse style suites, and Hemingways Ol Seki, perched on a ridge above the plains, both offer quiet, conservancy led game viewing. On the western edge, andBeyond Kichwa Tembo sits below the Oloololo Escarpment on a private concession. In the private Partakilat Conservancy, LOIRIEN Mara is a contemporary, conservation minded retreat. And within the reserve itself, the Ritz Carlton Masai Mara has recently opened. We know each of these well and are glad to advise on how they compare.

The best Maasai Mara trips often combine two camps, a private conservancy for quiet game viewing and the reserve for the river crossings. Many guests then pair the Mara with the elephants of Amboseli at Kitirua Plains Lodge, or the rhinos of Solio at the new JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve, for a fuller Kenya safari. Because we are based in Kenya and work with these camps directly, we can match you to the right one for your dates and budget, and handle the flights and transfers between them. Tell us how you like to travel and we will build a tailormade journey around it.
