A barrier reef rings almost the whole of Mauritius, which is why the water inside it lies so still. For families in particular, that lagoon changes everything.

The island is bigger and busier than the Seychelles, with golf, hiking and a genuine culture of its own. Below are the resorts we book most, and which coast each one sits on.

How to choose

Mauritius or the Seychelles

The question we are asked most. The Seychelles is closer to East Africa, wilder and more secluded, and better suited to honeymoons and short escapes.

Mauritius is larger, further, and has far more to do beyond the beach, with golf, hiking, distilleries and gardens. It suits families and longer stays, and the value at the top end is stronger.

Pairing with a safari

Seven to nine nights on safari, then five to seven in Mauritius, is the shape of most journeys we build. From Nairobi the direct flight runs about three hours and fifty minutes, and from Johannesburg it is a straightforward hop for anyone combining southern Africa.

When to go

May to December is the drier, cooler half of the year, and the most dependable for a beach stay. January to April is hotter and wetter, and falls within the cyclone season.

September to November is our usual recommendation, with warm days, calm seas and better value before the December peak.

An island nation in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 kilometres off the south east coast of Africa and east of Madagascar. Direct flights from Nairobi take about three hours and fifty minutes, and it connects well with Johannesburg for southern African safaris.
