Four nights on one of the Mara's most exclusive private conservancies. No road days. No compromises.
This is the Mara at its quietest, its wildest, and its most considered. Four nights at Mara Toto Plains, a small and beautifully kept camp set on one of the reserve's most exclusive private conservancies, where the guide to guest ratio is high, the vehicle traffic is low, and the wildlife often outnumbers the visitors.
Private conservancies are the great secret of the modern Mara. The wildlife moves freely between them and the main reserve, but the rules are different here. Night drives are permitted. Walking safaris are allowed. Off road driving is possible where it makes sense. Your guide is not racing other vehicles to a sighting, because there are no other vehicles.
A sunrise balloon flight is included, as is a champagne bush breakfast wherever you land. The rest of the rhythm is yours to shape. Long morning drives, late brunches, quiet afternoons by the camp, and evening drives that often run on into the dark for a chance at the nocturnal life of the bush.
Why we love this journey — three nights is enough to see the Mara. Four nights is enough to know it. Mara Toto Plains is one of the camps we send guests to when they tell us they want the very best of the reserve and have a few extra days to give it.
Mara Toto Plains — a small, exclusive camp on one of the Mara's most coveted private conservancies, with exceptional guiding and few vehicles.
Private conservancy privileges — off road driving, walking safaris, and night drives where permitted, all in a corner of the ecosystem rarely seen by other guests.
Four nights in the same camp — long enough to recognise the resident lion pride, to learn the names of the staff, and to feel the rhythm of the bush settle in around you.
Sunrise balloon flight — a champagne hot air balloon ride over the plains at dawn, finished with a bush breakfast on the savannah.
Fly in, fly out — direct light aircraft connections from Wilson Airport. No road days. Your time in the Mara fully protected.
Masterful guiding — Mara Toto's guides are among the most experienced in the ecosystem, with a quiet, anticipatory style that lets the bush speak for itself.
Arrive into Nairobi and be met by your Ongeri representative. A private transfer carries you to your hotel for a complimentary opening night, included as part of every short safari package. Settle in, gather yourself, and rest before tomorrow's flight to the bush.
A morning transfer to Wilson Airport for the scheduled flight to the Maasai Mara. You are met on the airstrip and driven into the private conservancy, often spotting your first wildlife along the way. Mara Toto Plains is a small, beautifully kept camp, and the welcome on arrival is warm and unrushed.
Late afternoon brings your first game drive. Because you are in a private conservancy, your guide can take you off the main roads, follow a track if a sighting calls for it, and stay out into the early evening for a chance at the nocturnal life. Drinks in the bush at dusk, then a slow drive back to camp for dinner.
Rise before first light for the sunrise balloon flight. You lift off as the plains catch the early gold, drifting silently over herds and rivers and the long shadows of waking lions. The flight ends with a champagne bush breakfast on the savannah, in the company of your pilot and guide.
The rest of the day unfolds at the camp's gentle pace. A long brunch, a quiet hour by your tent, then an afternoon and evening game drive that follows whatever the conservancy offers. With night drives permitted in the private concession, you might spot a porcupine on the move, a serval cat hunting in the long grass, or a leopard finally coming out to feed.
Your fourth day is yours to spend as you wish. Many guests take a walking safari in the morning, on foot with an armed guide, learning to read the bush at the speed it was meant to be read. Others head deeper into the conservancy in search of cheetah, or join their guide on a slow exploration of a single area, parked up among the wildlife rather than moving from sighting to sighting.
The camp can also arrange a private bush brunch, a visit to a nearby community, or a quiet afternoon by your tent with a book. Whatever you choose, the evening drive brings the day to a familiar, beautiful close, with sundowners and dinner waiting back at camp.
An early game drive carries you through the conservancy one final time, the plains as fresh as they were on your first morning. Breakfast at camp, farewells with the team who have shaped your stay, and a short transfer to the airstrip for your return flight to Nairobi. Onward connections are timed and handled by your Ongeri concierge.
