Luxury Safari for Seniors: Big Journeys at a Gentle Pace

Retirement gives you the one thing a great journey needs most. Time.

← All guides

In short

  • Senior travelers often have the time for the big journeys, the 12 to 16 day trips that cover several countries.
  • The best plans use fewer moves, longer stays and a private vehicle with a personal guide.
  • Our 16 day Legends of Africa travels by private jet, so you keep the same seat from Egypt to Victoria Falls.
  • Air medical evacuation cover is included in every journey. You should still carry your own travel insurance.

Many of our most memorable guests are in their 60s, 70s and 80s. They travel with time, curiosity and high standards.

They also choose big journeys. When days are not the limit, a trip can cross a whole continent.

We are a Kenyan owned luxury safari company in Karen, Nairobi. Here is how we plan for senior travelers.

Legends of Africa: 16 days by private jet

This is the largest journey we have built. Twelve guests travel together on a private jet across 4 countries: Egypt, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa.

  • A private Egyptologist at the Giza pyramids.
  • 4 nights on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan aboard the Soleil.
  • 4 nights at Angama Mara above the Mara Triangle in Kenya.
  • 3 nights at the Royal Livingstone at Victoria Falls.
  • Visas and 2 hot air balloon flights included.

It suits senior travelers for a simple reason. You do not queue at commercial airports, and the same aircraft carries you from stop to stop.

Departures are on 16 February 2028 and 5 November 2028, from USD 42,000 per person sharing. There are only 12 seats on each departure.

What makes a safari easy for senior travelers?

Four things matter most.

  • Fewer moves. Each change of camp means packing, a transfer and a flight. We keep those to a minimum.
  • A private vehicle. You set the pace. You stop when you like and return for a rest when you want one.
  • A personal guide. One guide who knows you, your needs and your interests.
  • Comfort first. Good beds, hot water, quiet suites and food that suits you.

How many nights should you stay in each camp?

We suggest at least 3 nights in each camp. Four is better.

A longer stay means you unpack once. It also means you can skip a game drive and nobody minds.

Are safari camps suitable for limited mobility?

Many are, but camps differ. Some have flat paths and suites close to the main areas. Others have steps, slopes and longer walks.

Tell us early about any mobility needs, and we will match the camp. Please also ask about:

  • Step height into the vehicle, and whether a step is provided.
  • Walking distance from your suite to the dining area.
  • Bathroom layout, including showers and baths.
  • Luggage limits on the small aircraft between camps.
  • Stairs and gangways on the Nile vessel, if you choose Legends of Africa.

We check these details for you before we book.

Health, medicine and insurance

Speak to your doctor well before you travel. Ask about vaccinations, malaria precautions and any medication you take.

Kenya has good private hospitals in Nairobi. Camps in the Maasai Mara are remote, so we plan carefully for emergencies.

Air medical evacuation cover is included in every Ongeri Expeditions journey. It is not a replacement for your own travel and medical insurance, so please carry both.

What does a typical day look like?

A gentle day often follows this rhythm.

  • A late morning start, or a very early one if you prefer.
  • A game drive, with a coffee stop in the bush.
  • A long lunch, then a rest.
  • A short afternoon drive at golden hour.
  • Dinner under the stars.

You can change any of it. Nothing is fixed.

Which time of year is best?

July to October brings the Great Migration to the Maasai Mara. It is exciting and busy.

January and February are dry and warm. Some older travelers prefer the quieter, greener months of November and March to May. Rain is more likely then.

Flying to Kenya from the USA

Long flights are tiring at any age. We suggest a rest night in Karen on arrival, and a stopover on the way if you prefer.

Read our guide to safari from the USA for routes and time differences by city.

Travelling with family

Many of our senior guests bring children and grandchildren. We design journeys for different ages, with a private vehicle and flexible plans for everyone.

Is a safari suitable for someone in their 70s or 80s?

Often, yes. Safaris are mostly seated and unhurried. The right camp, a private vehicle and a gentle pace make a big difference. Speak to your doctor before you travel.

What is Legends of Africa?

It is a 16 day private jet journey for 12 guests across Egypt, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa. It departs on 16 February 2028 and 5 November 2028, from USD 42,000 per person sharing.

How many nights should seniors stay in each camp?

We suggest at least 3 nights in each camp. Fewer moves mean more rest.

Can a safari work with limited mobility?

Often it can. Camps differ in steps, paths and bathroom layouts. Tell us your needs early and we will match the camp.

What is the best safari length for older travelers?

Many senior guests choose 8 to 16 days. Add a night in Karen on arrival to recover from the flight.

What happens in a medical emergency on safari?

We plan emergency access for every camp. Air medical evacuation cover is included in our journeys. You should also carry your own travel insurance.

Do I need vaccinations for Kenya?

Requirements depend on your health and where you have travelled. Ask your doctor or a travel clinic well before departure.

Is gorilla trekking suitable for older travelers?

Many older travelers trek successfully, but the trails are steep and uneven. Share your fitness level with us and we will request a suitable group.
