Gulf, Europe or New York?
Each route has its own feel.
- The Gulf. Doha and Abu Dhabi are the most common, with comfortable airports and good onward timings to Nairobi.
- Europe. Brussels and Frankfurt give some of the shortest total times.
- New York. Connecting at JFK puts you on the Kenya Airways nonstop to Nairobi, a flight of roughly 13.5 to 14 hours.
Which one is best depends on your dates and your patience for a layover. We are happy to talk it through.
What is the time difference?
Nairobi is 8 hours ahead of Chicago during daylight saving time. It is 9 hours ahead from early November to March.
Kenya keeps the same time all year, so the gap changes when Chicago changes its clocks.
Why January and February suit Chicago
These are dry, warm months in Kenya. Game viewing is excellent, the grass is shorter and the days are long and bright.
They are also peak season for the best camps. If you want a specific camp in January or February, book early and tell us your dates.
Three journeys we would suggest for Chicago travelers
| Journey | Days | Why it suits Chicago |
|---|---|---|
| 7 Day Maasai Mara and Serengeti Luxury Safari | 7 | Two countries and the Mara and Serengeti, in one week on the ground |
| 9 Day Ultra Luxury Maasai Mara and Serengeti Safari | 9 | Mara Plains Camp and Singita Sasakwa, for guests who want the very best |
| 12 Day Ultra Luxury Kenya and Tanzania Safari | 12 | A full trip across Kenya and Tanzania, worth the long flight |

Because the flight from Chicago is long, we suggest not less than 7 days on the ground. Fewer days make the travel feel heavy.
Your first day in Nairobi
You will usually land after a night in the air. We meet you at the airport, guide you through immigration and drive you to a quiet suite in Karen.
You rest, you eat well and you meet your safari designer if you wish. The safari proper begins the next morning.
What do Chicago guests need before they travel?
You need a valid passport and a Kenya electronic travel authorization. Tanzania needs an online visa. Fees and rules change, so we confirm them at booking, and you should check the official government portals before applying.
