In short
- There are no direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle to Nairobi. Every trip connects at least once, and total travel is often 21 to 26 hours.
- Nairobi is 10 hours ahead of the West Coast in daylight saving time and 11 hours ahead the rest of the year.
- Doha, Dubai, Istanbul and Amsterdam are the most common connections.
- We suggest at least 9 days on the ground, so the journey is worth the flight.
West Coast travelers cross more time zones than anyone in the USA to reach East Africa.
So we plan these trips differently. We build in rest, we suggest more days on the ground and we pick routes that keep the journey gentle.
We are a Kenyan owned luxury safari company in Karen, Nairobi. This page covers Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.
Are there direct flights from the West Coast to Kenya?
No. The most common one stop connections differ by city.
| City | Most common connections | Shortest average total |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | Doha 32%, Istanbul 18%, Dubai 14%, Amsterdam 10% | Paris, about 21h 56m |
| San Francisco | Istanbul 19%, Doha 18%, Dubai 18%, Frankfurt 18% | Amsterdam, about 22h 02m |
| Seattle | Doha 42%, Dubai 18%, Istanbul 11%, London 10% | Amsterdam, about 21h 52m |
Many itineraries run from about 21 to 26 hours. Longer layovers push that higher.
Schedules shift through the year. We check current options each time we plan a trip.
Which connection is best?
It depends on how you like to travel.
- Doha and Dubai. Comfortable airports and smooth onward flights. These are the most popular choices.
- Amsterdam and Frankfurt. Some of the shortest total times, and an easy place to stretch your legs.
- A planned stopover. Break the trip with a night in Europe or the Gulf. It costs a day and gives you a calmer arrival.
What is the time difference?
Nairobi is 10 hours ahead of the West Coast during daylight saving time. It is 11 hours ahead from early November to March.
That is a big gap. Plan for a quiet first day.
Why we suggest more days from the West Coast
A long flight is easier to justify with a longer stay. We suggest at least 9 days on the ground, and 10 to 13 days if you can.
That gives you time to rest, to see the Maasai Mara properly and to add a second destination.
Three journeys we would suggest for West Coast travelers
| Journey | Days | Why it suits the West Coast |
|---|---|---|
| 9 Day Ultra Luxury Maasai Mara and Serengeti Safari | 9 | Two countries and two of the finest camps, at an unhurried pace |
| 12 Day Ultra Luxury Kenya and Tanzania Safari | 12 | A full journey that makes the flight worthwhile |
| 10 Day Kenya Safari and Mauritius Beach Holiday | 10 | Safari first, then a private beach to recover |

Your first days in Nairobi
You will land after a very long journey. We meet you at the airport, guide you through immigration and take you to a quiet suite in Karen.
Rest, eat and sleep. If you need a second night before the safari begins, we arrange it.
When should West Coast travelers go?
July to October brings the Great Migration to the Maasai Mara. It is the most popular season, so book early.
Shoulder months such as March to May and November can bring quieter camps and lower flight fares. Rain is more likely, and the landscape is green.
What do West Coast guests need before they travel?
You need a valid passport and a Kenya electronic travel authorization. Tanzania needs an online visa. Fees and rules change, so we confirm them at booking, and you should check the official government portals before applying.
