In short

  • The best luxury honeymoon camps in Laikipia and Lewa are Segera Retreat, Loisaba Lodo Springs, Loisaba Star Beds, The Sanctuary at Ol Lentille, Ol Malo, andBeyond Suyian Lodge, Ol Jogi, Sanctuary Tambarare Camp, Kifaru House and Sirikoi.
  • Choose Suyian for a private plunge pool in every suite, and Ol Jogi for a whole private estate.
  • Choose Loisaba Star Beds to sleep under the open sky, and Tambarare to see the last 2 northern white rhinos.
  • Most couples spend 3 to 4 nights here, before or after the Maasai Mara.

Most honeymooners picture the Maasai Mara first. Fewer picture Laikipia, and that is exactly why we love sending couples there.

Laikipia is a high plateau in northern Kenya, rising towards Mount Kenya. It is made of private conservancies and ranches rather than public reserves, so the pace is yours. You can ride a horse across open plains, walk with a guide, drive after dark, or fall asleep outdoors.

Lewa, its famous neighbour, sits on the same slopes. Many of our couples enjoy the two together.

We are a Kenyan owned luxury safari company in Karen, Nairobi, and we plan these stays every week. Below are the 10 camps we choose most often for honeymoons, with an honest word on who each one suits. For the bigger picture, see our Laikipia safari guide.

Segera Retreat: the best art and wellness honeymoon retreat in Laikipia

Segera is the camp we suggest when a couple wants to feel looked after and a little inspired. It has 10 villas, and 5 of them are one bedroom villas made for 2. Each one looks across a private conservancy towards Mount Kenya.

The art is the first thing you notice. Segera holds a large private collection of contemporary African art, so even the walk to dinner feels like a small exhibition.

Mornings can be slow, with a long spa treatment or time in the gym. Afternoons can go further. You can join day and night drives, set out on a guided walk, spend a night sleeping out under the stars, or take a helicopter trip to Lake Turkana.

It is rare to find so much calm and so much adventure under one roof.

Elewana Loisaba Lodo Springs: the best honeymoon camp in Laikipia for riding and sundowners

Lodo Springs is for couples who would rather be outdoors than indoors. It has 8 tented rooms in the 23,000 hectare Loisaba Conservancy. Each has floor to ceiling doors and windows, a veranda above the plains, and a rain shower with double sinks.

Every guest is given a Guest Ambassador, a person who shapes your days around what you enjoy. That might be a ride on horseback or camelback, a mountain bike ride, a walk with Samburu guides, or an afternoon fishing at Kiboko dam.

Breakfast can be in the bush. Sundowners are on the kopjes, the granite outcrops that glow as the light drops. You can also book a night in a star bed, which makes a lovely finale.

Loisaba Star Beds: the best star bed honeymoon in Kenya

Few things are as romantic as falling asleep under the whole night sky. Loisaba Star Beds makes it simple. There are just 4 rooms, open plan, with only a soft mesh panel between you and the stars.

If rain comes, the bed rolls inside. On cool nights a hot water bottle is tucked in beside you. Each room looks over a watering hole where hippos and other wildlife come to drink.

Be honest with yourselves about the style. It is rustic and open, with no pool and no spa, and light sleepers may not love it. Most couples pair it with a more polished camp, and spend 1 or 2 nights here for the memory.

The Sanctuary at Ol Lentille: the best community owned villa lodge in Laikipia

Ol Lentille was Laikipia's first all villa lodge, and it still feels special. There are 4 villas on a hilltop, each with its own staff and 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms. Some have small plunge pools, and the lodge has an infinity pool, a spa, and a library with a rooftop bar.

Meals are part of the romance. Breakfast arrives at your villa, lunch is by the pool, and dinner is served by candlelight out in the bush.

The land is owned by the Samburu and Maasai communities who live on it. So your honeymoon supports the people who protect this wildlife. You can drive by day or night, walk, climb Ol Lentille hill, ride in a helicopter or visit the community.

Ol Malo: the best rustic romantic lodge in northern Laikipia

Ol Malo is simple, warm and a little wild. Its 4 rustic cottages sit high on a rocky escarpment, each with a private veranda and picture windows over a watering hole and salt lick.

Around you is a 5,000 acre private sanctuary, with Mount Kenya on the horizon. The days are active. You can explore on horseback or by camel, watch for leopards overnight, fish, or run with a Samburu warrior.

It is not grand, and it does not try to be. Choose it if you want a real bush stay with character.

andBeyond Suyian Lodge: the best Laikipia honeymoon lodge with a private plunge pool

Suyian answers a question we hear often: can we have our own pool? Yes. Every suite has a private plunge pool.

The suites are shaped to echo the granite kopjes around them, and there is a family suite too, though the lodge feels made for 2. A shared infinity pool sits beside the main area, and an open air spa uses locally sourced oils.

The setting is a private conservancy beside the Ewaso Narok River, with granite ridges, ancient fig trees and open valleys. Days can include 4WD drives, birdwatching, guided walks and horse riding. Do not miss the anti poaching dogs display, which lasts about 1 hour.

The conservancy is central to Samburu community conservation, so your stay has purpose as well as comfort.

Ol Jogi: the best private estate for a honeymoon in Laikipia

Ol Jogi is not a camp, it is an estate. It stands on a 58,000 acre private wildlife conservancy, about a 45 minute flight from Nairobi.

There are 7 private cottages, named after animals on the property, and room for up to 14 guests. For a honeymoon you take the whole place, with your own chef, housekeeping and guides.

Everything is here. The Pool House has a spa, steam room, hammam, sauna, Jacuzzi, gym and yoga room beside the outdoor pool. There is a floodlit tennis court, a private cinema, a library of more than 2,000 books, and a viewing tunnel at the watering hole.

Beyond the gardens roam lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and buffalo. The conservancy also protects Grevy's zebra, African wild dogs and black rhinos. You can take game drives and riding safaris, or fly by helicopter to Mount Kenya to fish.

Sanctuary Tambarare Camp: the best place to see northern white rhinos on a honeymoon

Some moments you tell for the rest of your life. Seeing the last 2 northern white rhinos on Earth is one of them, and Tambarare puts you right there.

The Abercrombie & Kent Sanctuary camp sits in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, below Mount Kenya. It has 10 canvas tents, each with a super king bed, floor to ceiling windows, a private veranda and an en suite bathroom.

Ol Pejeta also holds the Big 5, so game drives are full of life. You can choose day and night drives, bush walks, horse riding or cycle safaris, then end with sundowners.

It is a lively base rather than a hideaway. Pick it if rhinos are on your list.

Elewana Kifaru House: the best active honeymoon stay in Lewa

Kifaru means rhino in Swahili, and the name suits the setting. The camp sits in the Lewa Conservancy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it has just 5 cottages.

That smallness is the charm. With so few guests, your days can take shape around you. You can go on game drives and guided walks, ride horses or camels, enjoy a bush breakfast, and meet local communities.

Evenings end with a sundowner. Kifaru House pairs well with Loisaba, since both are Elewana camps.

Sirikoi: the best intimate camp with a waterhole in Lewa

Sirikoi rests in a quiet glade inside the Lewa Conservancy, on private land on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya. It has 4 tented rooms facing a waterhole, each with a roll top bath.

Spend a morning on the veranda deck among lawns and acacia trees, and the wildlife comes to you. An infinity pool is close by. The camp grows vegetables in its own garden for the kitchen, so meals taste fresh.

When you want to explore, you can ride horses through the bush, go on game drives, or take a guided walk in the Ngare Ndare forest with a ranger. A visit to the Il Ngwesi Maasai community is easy to arrange.

If you want more space, Sirikoi Cottage has 2 en suite bedrooms, and Sirikoi House suits a family or small group.

Lewa holds 12% of Kenya's black rhino population, and the world's largest single population of Grevy's zebra.

The price depends on the camp, the season and the number of nights. Rates are usually quoted per person per night. Ol Jogi is priced on request, because you take the whole estate.

Ask us for current rates for your dates, and whether a honeymoon offer applies. Read our guide to honeymoon safari costs for how the total comes together.
